The Project comprises the design and construction of an expressway to the north of Doha with nine grade-separated junctions subject to further optimization to replace the four-level stack interchange with the most optimum design. The proposed upgrade generally follows the alignment of the existing Al Khor Coastal Road between Lusail and the proposed Al Khor Bypass.
The new expressway shall have five traffic lanes in each direction. The carriageways shall be divided by a central median which includes provision for the future Qatar Rail Metro Red Line. The 33-km Al Khor Road with 10 interchanges is a key access point between east north and Doha. The new road layout will considerably upgrade the vehicular capacity from 8000 to 20000 vehicles per hour in both directions. The Olympic Cycling Track extends along 33 km and has a width of seven meters which will enable international sports competitions, especially since the Olympic path is designed to allow speeds up to 50 km per hour, notably with the construction of 29 tunnels and 5 bridges.
Al Khor Road will become the center of development to encourage the population of Doha to move outside the historic city and to reconstruct the eastern areas of Qatar to Al Khor. The project will open the door for more investment, whether in the field of business or real estate, or increase the agricultural area as it took into account all future infrastructure projects in the areas of telecommunications, water drainage, and sewage, among others.
